Rivera: Robertson is the Yankees’ closer now

Hal Steinbrenner named David Robertson the new Yankees closer last week. Robertson got an even better endorsement Saturday night from Mariano Rivera.

While Rivera was being honored at the New York Chapter BBWAA dinner, a fan yelled out “one more year.”

The retired closer made it clear he had “emptied the tank,” then pointed to Robertson and said “You have your new closer right here.”

Also, it wouldn’t be the offseason without Mets general manager Sandy Alderson mocking the team’s offseason.

During the dinner at the New York Hilton, Alderson said jokingly the plans of the Yankees and Mets were converging because both teams signed Japanese pitchers last week.

He pointed out the Yankees were paying Masahiro Tanaka $155 million over seven years, while the Mets, who signed Daisuke Matsuzaka to a minor league deal, were paying him “month-to-month.”
