Shop worker arrested for robbing and setting fire to store

A worker at a high-end Italian store on Madison Avenue was arrested yesterday for robbing and then setting fire to the shop, causing almost $1 million in damages, authorities said.

James Carter, 34, worked at Camicissima Milano at 509 Madison Avenue for three months while the owner was in Italy, swiping hundreds of dollars from the pocketbooks of female employees, according to an FDNY spokesman.

On May 15, he stole clothing from the store, including cashmere clothes, as well as the office laptop, then started the fire to cover-up what he took, FDNY sources said.

He was arrested by fire marshals and charged with arson, reckless endangerment, criminal larceny, grand larceny and reckless endangerment of property.
