The unsolved, eight-year-old Manhattan park murder of a young Juilliard student today took a bizzare turn – as investigators linked DNA from the crime scene to DNA collected from a heavy chain abandoned at a subway station by Occupy Wall Street protestors this spring, sources said.
Law enforcement sources told The Post that police have linked genetic material from the chain to DNA found on a pink CD player discovered near the decomposed body of 21-year old Sarah Fox, who disappeared after going for a run in May, 2004.
The DNA discovery – first reported by NBC News – could be a huge break in a case that has stumped investigators for years, sources said, noting that whoever’s DNA is on the chain and the CD player could likely be Fox’s killer.
Police have still not identified the source of the DNA.
The chain, described as a heavy, linked version often used to secure gates, was found at the Beverly Road subway station after it was abandoned by OWS protestors on March 28.
Fox’s nude and strangled body was discovered in Inwood Hill Park six days after she vanished.
Dimitry Sheinman, a handyman and self-proclaimed psychic, has long been considered a top suspect in Fox’s murder. He has denied being the killer.
