Orange deck no. 1 cards

In Louisville, Ky., Brandon Triche scored 23 points and Michael Carter-Williams scored the final four points as No. 6 Syracuse rallied to upset No. 1 Louisville 70-68 yesterday in a showdown of unbeaten Big East teams.

It was the second straight Saturday No. 1 went down, after Duke lost to then-No. 20 North Carolina State 84-76 last week. It was the Orange’s third straight win over the Cardinals.

Carter-Williams had 16 points, Jerami Grant and C.J. Fair both had 10 for the Orange (17-1, 5-0) who won their seventh straight.

Russ Smith’s 25 points led Louisville (16-2, 4-1), which had its 11-game winning streak stopped.

Butler 64, Gonzaga 63

In Indianapolis, Roosevelt Jones stole an inbound pass with 3.5 seconds left and hit a floater from just inside the foul line right before the buzzer to help No. 13 Butler upset No. 8 Gonzaga.

Jones finished with 20 points and the Bulldogs have now won 13 in a row including two straight without their top scorer, Rotnei Clarke. It’s the first time Butler (16-2, 3-0 Atlantic 10) has ever beaten three top 10 teams in one season. They also defeated No. 9 North Carolina in November and No. 1 Indiana in December.

Gonzaga (17-2, 4-0 West Coast Conference) was led by Saw Dower and Elias Harris who each had 20 points. The loss ended the Zags eight-game winning streak.

Kansas 64, Texas 59

In Austin, Texas, Ben McLemore scored 16 points and No. 4 Kansas (16-1, 4-0 Big 12) stormed back from a late double-digit deficit to stun Texas (8-9, 0-4) for the Jayhawks’ 15th straight win.

In Gainesville, Fla., Scottie Wilbekin had 13 points and 10 assists, his first career double-double, and No. 10 Florida (14-2, 4-0 SEC) thumped No. 17 Missouri (13-4, 2-2) to give coach Billy Donovan his 400th win with the Gators.

Michigan St. 59, Ohio St. 56

In East Lansing, Mich., Keith Appling made two free throws with 7.9 seconds left and finished with 15 points to help No. 18 Michigan State (16-3, 5-1 Big Ten) beat Ohio State (13-4, 3-2). Deshaun Thomas, who scored a career Big Ten-high 28 points, was upset Shannon Scott didn’t pass him the ball in the closing seconds, instead missing a running 3-point try.

Wichita St. 67, Creighton 64

In Wichita, Kan., Carl Hall had 17 points and 13 rebounds, Malcolm Armstead hit two key free throws in the closing seconds and Wichita State (17-2, 6-1 MVC) held off Doug McDermott (25 points) and No. 12 Creighton (17-2, 6-1).

Cincy 71, Marquette 69 (OT)

In Cincinnati, Sean Kilpatrick scored seven of his career-high 36 points in overtime, and the Bearcats (16-3, 4-2 Big East) blew a 16-point lead before rallying over No. 25 Marquette (13-4, 4-1), ending a streak of three straight home losses.
