Jeter casts eye toward future with foray into … publishing

Now batting as a book publisher, No. 2, Derek Jeter, No. 2.

The Yankees’ future Hall of Fame shortstop has begun making some post-retirement plans with a partnership with Simon & Schuster — announced on Thursday — to create his own publishing division called “Jeter Publishing.”

The program will include a range of genres in adult non-fiction, as well as children’s books. Jeter’s division will include sports and non-sports related books.

“This publishing partnership with Simon & Schuster is an exciting way for me to discover and develop new books, sharing insights of my own, or from people I believe have interesting stories, philosophies or practices to share,” Jeter said in a release.

Jeter, who turns 40 in June, is coming off of his most frustrating season ever. He was limited to 17 games due to a lingering ankle injury and batted .190 as the Yankees missed the playoffs for only the second time since he debuted in 1995. He recently signed a one-year, $12 million deal to play in his 20th major league season.
