Bail upped to $1M in alleged E. Village DWI after victim dies

A judge raised bail to a whopping $1 million Tuesday for an allegedly drugged up, drunk driver because the East Village florist he ran over in June died of his injuries.

Shaun Martin, who was allegedly high on PCP and methamphetamine, jumped a curb and smashed into the storefront of East Village Farm and Grocery on Second Avenue, slamming into Akkas Ali, 62, and two other bystanders June 19.

Prosecutors asked Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Renee White to raise Martin’s bail from $100,000 because of Ali’s death. He was immediately taken into custody.

Prosecutors told the judge they’re investigating whether the crash was the direct cause of Ali’s death. If it’s determined it was, they’re likely to upgrade the charges against him, possibly to manslaughter.

Martin, 32, currently faces two counts of first-degree vehicular assault, two counts of felony assault with serious injury, felony DWI and criminal possession raps.

He was going so fast when his Nissan Altima careened into the deli that he launched a fire hydrant nearly a block before taking out a parking meter, a row of bikes and a light pole.

Eight people were injured in the accident and Ali, who suffered broken bones and brain trauma, died of his injuries about three weeks ago, sources said.

Martin, who emerged unscathed from the collision, has previous arrests for DWI and cocaine possession.
