Lawyer held without bail in banana mogul investigation

A lawyer tied to a banana mogul under investigation in a deadly, drug-fueled sex romp was ordered held without bail today after a judge learned about his lengthy history of mental illness and cocaine addiction.

Barry Balaban, 59, repeatedly interrupted a Manhattan federal court hearing and tried to talk over the judge before getting locked up on charges of suborning perjury and tampering with a witness.

Balaban was secretly recorded coaching a woman to deny that Thomas Hoey Jr., owner of the Long Island Banana Corp., gave cocaine to her and another woman who fatally overdosed inside a Park Avenue hotel in 2009.
