Weird But True

The Post saved my boyfriend’s life!

It’s one more reason to get The Post!

This Thanksgiving, an elderly Westchester woman celebrated the 10th anniversary of something she’s eternally thankful for — how the New York Post saved her boyfriend from almost certain death 10 years ago.

It had been a normal afternoon in Scarsdale until Margot Schwartz noticed a copy of her beau’s favorite paper still wrapped in a red plastic bag on his doorstep.

She had been dating Irwin Rydell, now 87, for about a year — long enough to know the first thing he did in the morning was pick up the newspaper.

“I knew something was wrong,” recalled Schwartz, 83, who had been visiting family in Fair Lawn, NJ.

“I called him, and it was busy, and I was very upset that I couldn’t reach him,” she said. “I had an intuition.”

She grew more worried when she couldn’t get into his house. She summoned police, who broke in and found Rydell unconscious because of a reaction to medication.

“They couldn’t find a pulse, but they worked on him,” she said.

EMS workers took him to White Plains Hospital, where she fretted over him.

“That was it. After that, he was my patient,” she said, recalling the relief she felt when he recovered.

“But it was The Post, not the doctor, who saved him.”
