Rdio dials up online digital movie store

Rdio is getting into the Vdio business.

The company that competes with Spotify, Rhapsody and other digital music-subscription services added movies to its business lineup with the launch yesterday of Vdio.

An online digital movie store, Vdio is similar to iTunes and Amazon, offering movie and TV show rentals for $4.95 and sales for $12.95.

Vdio had been in a testing mode overseas for a year.

The company was thought to be exploring offering movies and TV on a subscription basis, similar to Netflix.

Subscription movies and TV, however, require special deals with the major studios — something Rdio lacks.

For now, Vdio is only available to subscribers of Rdio’s unlimited music package, which costs $10 a month.

Vdio is a “new way to buy, rent, and share your favorite movies and TV shows with your friends, in real time,” the company said in a statement yesterday.

Skype co-founder Janus Friis also started Rdio and Vdio.
