Parents of slain Chicago girl meet with Mayor Bloomberg to discuss gun control

The parents of a Chicago girl whose death became a symbol of the toll of gun violence have met with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to discuss gun control.

Cleopatra and Nathaniel Pendleton went to New York City Hall on Thursday to talk with the mayor, who is an ardent and influential gun-control advocate.

The Pendletons’ 15-year-old daughter, Hadiya, was killed in January.

Gun control advocates are pressing Congress to pass proposals that include requiring background checks for nearly all gun purchases and cracking down on straw buyers.

Cleopatra Pendleton says they would create needed accountability. She says she’s very hopeful they will pass.

The National Rifle Association opposes the background check plan and wants other measures, like more armed guards at schools.
