Times Sq. street performer helps reunite owner with missing cat two years later

Attack of the hero zombie!

A Times Square street performer rescued a runaway cat from a busy intersection — then helped return the pet to his cop owner, reuniting the two after years apart.

Jeremy Zelkowitz, 22, who works for the year-round haunted house Times Scare scooped the five-year-old tuxedo cat off 42nd Street on Saturday night in full costume. He then brought the cat to BluePearl Veterinary Partners on 55th Street, where the feline was micro-chipped and returned to his owner, James Helliesen.

Helliesen, 51, a 79th Precinct police officer, said a vet called to report his furry friend had been found — and he at first thought it was a prank.

“I couldn’t believe it. I was so surprised. I figured he’d run away for good,” he said.

Helliesen, who lives on Long Island, said he adopted the cat after the feline began to hang around the precinct. He named him “Disaster” because the precinct motto at the time was “Flirting with Disaster.”

Helliesen said the cat ran away after his wife left the window open. He now has nine cats total.
