10 new coat trends hot off the runways

Winter is coming, but that doesn’t mean you have to break out the ubiquitous black peacoat with the pilled sleeves and ripped lining hanging in your closet — or buy yet another black coat to replace it. This season, designers have come up with some of the prettiest outerwear offerings we’ve seen in years. Florals! Sparkles! Pink! And a teddy bear, too! Take your cues from the runway, and go forth and bundle up in these less pricey options:

Plaid

Plaid pretty much ruled the fall runways. Stella McCartney’s overcoat emphasized the pattern’s borrowed-from-the-boys vibe, with an oversize shape and exaggerated shoulders. Zara’s red-white-and-blue number has a more traditional silhouette, but it still makes a bold statement.
On model: Oversize wool coat, $3,120 at stellamccartney.com
Affordable: Wool-blend plaid coat, $239 at Zara, 666 Fifth Ave.

Military

Prabal Gurung sent a platoon of babes dressed in army-inspired wares — olive green hues, furry hoods and tough leather trimmings — down the runway. Follow the designer’s orders and try this Nicole Miller style on for size: It packs the perfect punch between fashion and function.

On model: Prabal Gurung fur-trimmed cotton peplum anorak, $7,190 at Bergdorf Goodman, 754 Fifth Ave.
Affordable: Fur-trimmed down parka, $647 at nicolemiller.com

Floral

Floral for fall? Yes, please! Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci’s flower power has a punky edge, thanks to ribbed shoulders and asymmetrical zippers, while this Ted Baker coat is a traditional beauty in full bloom — with a price you can bank on.
On model: Givenchy printed wool-blend moto jacket, $5,295 at barneys.com
Affordable: Ted Baker printed cotton coat, $448 at Bloomingdale’s, 1000 Third Ave.

Embellished/Evening

Who knew outerwear could be so darn pretty? It’s no surprise that Giambattista Valli’s evening-appropriate threads are showstoppers; he’s known for making magic out of the mundane. Can’t swing couture? Look to this shimmery Kate Spade style.
On model: Giambattista Valli tweed coat, similar styles for $2,700 at Saks Fifth Avenue, 611 Fifth Ave.
Affordable: Tweed coat, $698 at katespade.com

Teddy Bear

Remember when it was totally OK to walk around in public with your favorite teddy bear in tow? These are the grown-up equivalents. Max Mara’s coat is oversize and finished in a classic brown hue, while Topshop’s take is an affordable, go-to security blanket for the harsh winter ahead.
On model: Max Mara textured alpaca-blend coat, $2,955 at matchesfashion.com
Affordable: Faux-fur coat, $250 at topshop.com

Coat Dress

No one does a chic silhouette quite like Raf Simons, as the coat-dresses he sent down Dior’s fall runway demonstrated. Longer in length and fuller in skirt, they’re feminine and sleek. So is this double-breasted number from J.Crew.
On model: Wool coatdress, $5,900 at Dior, 21 E. 57th St.
Affordable: Wool-blend topcoat, $425 at jcrew.com

Pink

It’s the hue that has ladies all aflutter this season. Even fashion’s quintessential minimalist, Céline designer Phoebe Philo, sent rose-color coats down the runway. Dare to wear this price-friendly ASOS take on the trend; its menswear-inspired silhouette is the perfect foil to the girly color.
On model: Double-faced cashmere coat, $5,600 at Céline, 870 Madison Ave.
Affordable: Wool-blend cocoon coat, $196 at asos.com

Colorful Fur

This season, designers looked to Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat for fur-inspiration. Can’t afford this ultra-luxe Cavalli? Opt for this equally wild (but not as wildly priced) faux-fur style from Urbancode.
On model: Fox fur coat, price upon request at Roberto Cavalli, 711 Madison Ave.
Affordable: Urbancode faux-fur coat, $269 at Pixie Market, 100 Stanton St.

Cocoon

Carven’s Guillaume Henry offered up a highly stylized take on fall’s coziest outerwear trend, while Marc by Marc Jacobs shows that double-breasted can be snuggly. Even the sleeves look like a sweater!
On model: Crushed wool coat, $1,995 at Carven, 83 Mercer St.
Affordable: Marc by Marc Jacobs stretchwool coat, $698 at Saks Fifth Avenue

Embroidered

Valentino’s Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli worked the folkloric vibe with their richly embroidered coats and capes in severe silhouettes. This Benetton number is equally prim, but comes with a price that’s lighter on the wallet.
On model: Valentino cotton-blend tapestry cape, $3,690 at net-aporter.com
Affordable: Flocked wool-blend tapestry coat, $295 at United Colors of Benetton, 601 Fifth Ave.
