Amazon wants to deliver with drones

Duck!

Amazon.com hopes that within five years, it will be delivering merchandise directly to its customers’ homes — by drone.

CBS newsman Charlie Rose reported that the mega-merchandiser’s CEO, Jeff Bezos, disclosed the top-secret plan for drone delivery after their “60 Minutes’’ interview Sunday.

A video on CBS’s Web site shows an “octocopter’’ picking up a package in a small yellow bucket at a company warehouse, taking off with it and depositing it on a customer’s lawn.

Bezos admitted that “Amazon Prime Air’’ will require safety testing, not to mention approvals and permits from the feds. But he hopes drones will land at customers’ homes 30 minutes after purchases.

Many viewers were skeptical. In one post on the Web site, a viewer asked, “How would it deliver to high rises? Is it gonna leave it on the sidewalk where it could get stolen?”
