Feds nix ‘nanny’ diplomat’s new court date

The Indian diplomat whose arrest over allegedly fraudulent documents for her nanny sparked a furor tried to have her court date moved Monday, but was shot down by the US attorney.

The lawyer for Devyani Khobragade said that the Jan. 13 date should be put off because of “significant communications” between the prosecution and defense.

Both sides believe a plea deal may be in the works.

But US Attorney Preet Bharara said that, although the prosecution remains open to the discussions, the request to move the court date was not an option.

India has demanded all charges be dropped against Khobragade, whose bust triggered protests at the US Embassy in New Delhi.Rich Calder
