LI fans fume over Jets’ aborted landing

The Jets are jilting their Long Island fans again.

Despite the team’s promise that it would stage an annual preseason practice at its old training facility at Hofstra University, Gang Green won’t be scrimmaging there for the third year in a row.

“The Jets continue to crap on our faces like we never existed,” wrote George VonAchen, one of 180 furious Long Islanders who’ve signed an online petition.

“It’s a slap in the face,” said Sean Deegan, petition organizer and founder of JetsInsider.com. “The Jets should really take a step back and look at who their bread and butter is. The fact that they’re neglecting us is not good business.”

The Jets practiced at the Hempstead campus from 1968 until 2008, when they moved to a new $75 million facility in Florham Park, NJ, and began holding their summer training camp in upstate Cortland.

Back then, Jets owner Woody Johnson vowed to hold an annual scrimmage on Long Island — where the team’s most passionate fans and a large group of season-ticket holders live.

But the 2011 practice was scrapped by bad weather, and last year’s was scrubbed for presidential-debate preparations. No summer scrimmage was even scheduled this year.

“Long Island is the location of the Jets’ fan base,” fumed John Gigliotti of Oceanside. “We’ve supported the team since it was born. This is how we get repaid?”

On JetsInsider.com, one sidelined spectator said: “It is criminal what Woody Johnson has done to this franchise in regards to how it treats its fans. I will not contribute one dime in support of this team again.”

The Jets, who finished a miserable 6-10 last season, have the highest average, non-premium ticket prices in the NFL at $117.94, according to Team Marketing Report’s Fan Cost Index last fall.

“Although our plans did not materialize this year, it is nonetheless an ongoing priority for us,” a Jets spokesman said.
