MLB: Red Sox storm back in 9th to beat M’s

In Boston, Daniel Nava’s single to center field capped a six-run rally in the bottom of the ninth as the Red Sox came back to beat the Mariners, 8-7, after Felix Hernandez had limited Boston to one run in the game’s first seven innings.

One night after winning in 15 innings for their major league-leading 10th walkoff victory, the Red Sox did it again to open a one-game lead in the AL East over the idle Rays.

In Baltimore, a day after being acquired from the Astros, Bud Norris dominated his former teammates for six innings, and Chris Davis hit his MLB-leading 39th home run in the Orioles’ 6-3 victory.

In Pittsburgh, the Cardinals averted a five-game sweep at Pittsburgh, ending a season-worst seven-game losing streak by routing the Pirates 13-0 in a matchup between the NL’s top two teams. St. Louis began the five-game series with a 2 1/2-game lead in the NL Central but left with the Pittsburgh ahead by 1 1/2 games.

In Arlington, Texas, Yu Darvish (10-5) struck out 14, matching the most in his 50 major league starts, and the Rangers hit three solo homers and beat the Diamondbacks 7-1 in a makeup game.

Cal Ripken Jr. announced a $100,000 reward for information that helps lead to the capture and conviction of the person who abducted his mother for 24 hours a year ago.

NCAA: Alabama sits atop preseason football poll

Alabama is No. 1 in the USA Today preseason coaches’ poll.
