5 Questions for Brian Baldinger

Before he embarked on his training camp tour NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger talked Jets quarterback competition, Rex Ryan and the Giants status in the NFC East with The Post’s Justin Terranova.

Q: Thoughts on the Jets quarterback competition?

A: Just watching OTAs with the Jets, Geno Smith has a better arm than Mark Sanchez, but he doesn’t have the familiarity and experience that Mark has. I would expect Marty Mornhinweg to help his quarterbacks out, but this offense isn’t easy to digest quickly, and Mark has had experience with it and that makes him the odds-on-favorite to win the job at least in camp.

Q: Do you get the sense at all the Jets want Smith to win the job?

A: If John Idzik and Jets brass want Geno Smith in there then they’ll get him in there, but I don’t get that feeling right now. … And the players know who the best option is at quarterback. You can’t lie to your team. Your team knows day in and day out who is the best quarterback.

Q: Any concerns about Rex Ryan’s lame-duck status?

A: The best thing Rex Ryan did this offseason was realize he had to get back to defense and put his thumbprint on that side of the ball. When he did, guys literally ran through walls of fire for him. I know it killed him to lose Darrelle (Revis), but in a way he probably hurt Darrelle by saying he was the best defensive player in the league because then he expected to get paid like that.

Q: Do you expect the Giants to be right in the mix at the top of the NFC East?

A: Eli (Manning) is there. He is the best quarterback in the division. He is a big-game player. Victor Cruz is locked up, Hakeem Nicks will be healthier. That should be a very good offense. Defensively, can Jason Pierre- Paul get back to what he was two years ago where he was the most dominant player on the field? … The Giants should feel confident going into the season. They had so many guys get hurt before the season I don’t think they ever recovered from it.

Q: What are you looking to see at Eagles camp?

A: What this offense is going to look like. Chip Kelly at Oregon, his quarterbacks ran the ball, his quarterbacks didn’t turn the ball over. He’s saying he can adapt his offense , but if you want to use all of the playbook Kelly has, then Michael Vick is your best option.
