The driver of the car that plunged into a Queens creek, killing four promising college students, came home from the hospital Sunday as authorities said he may face criminal charges in the deadly accident.
Andrew Gramm, 20, who returned to his East Elmhurst home unharmed, told police he was speeding down a dead-end street Friday before skidding and vaulting the vehicle into Steinway Creek, killing four friends.
“The weight might be a little heavy,” said Gramm’s grandfather, Gus J. Stuckey. “But other than that, he’s doing OK.”
Gramm was the only survivor of the crash that killed Darius Fletcher, 21, Jaleel Furtado, 20, Jada Butts, 19, and Crystal Gravely, 19, on Friday.
They were all out celebrating a birthday before the deadly crash.
Gramm, who had no alcohol in his system, has not been charged in the accident, but Queens DA Richard Brown said his office is “actively investigating the accident.”
Gramm, who is studying to be a pharmacist, could face reckless-endangerment charges, according to a retired highway police officer who has investigated such incidents.
Gramm told cops he was doing “about 60” when he blew past two signs reading “Dead End” and barreled toward the creek’s embankment.
Stuckey said Gramm had spoken to the family of one of the victims, but it was not clear if he apologized.
“He’s broke up about it,” the grandfather said.
