Jets’ Holmes doesn’t practice, will still likely play

Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes did not practice Thursday, but it was a scheduled day off.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said the trainers and doctors have a plan for Holmes that includes some days off from practice as he tries to come back from a serious foot injury suffered a year ago.

Holmes returned to practice last week and the belief around the Jets is he will play this Sunday. A source told The Post on Wednesday that Holmes would play for a limited number of snaps.

Ryan would not reveal how close Holmes is to playing.

“Like I’ve said from day 1, I certainly hope [he can play],” Ryan said. ”Again, we’ll make sure we get the absolute clearance from our doctors and our trainers before we do that.”

Holmes did more in practice on Monday and Wednesday than he had last week and Ryan liked what he saw.

“I thought he looked pretty good. He really hadn’t practiced a lot,” Ryan said. “It’s a new system and things. I thought he caught the ball well and thought he moved around pretty good.”

Fellow wide receiver Stephen Hill said Holmes looks like his old self.

“Tone looks like last year’s Tone,” Hill said.

Ryan acknowledged the Jets would have to scale back what Holmes would normally do if he gets on the field.

“Normally if you know he’s healthy – if you play 70 snaps, he’d be in 70 of them,” Ryan said. “I don’t know. I would think that would be altered a little.”

Ryan said the decision will come from the medical staff.

“It’s not really what I need to see,” Ryan said. “I was comfortable with him in a boot. It’s more the trainers and doctors.”

The other players who did not practice Thursday were OLB Quinton Coples (ankle) and QB Mark Sanchez (shoulder). CB Antonio Cromartie (hip), NT Kenrick Ellis (back) and DT Leger Douzable (illness) were limited.
