Jets could cut QB Quinn, bring him back Monday

It’s possible the Jets could cut quarterback Brady Quinn this weekend, then re-sign him on Monday in order to save money.

The Jets signed Quinn this week and are carrying four quarterbacks, with Geno Smith starting, Matt Simms the backup and Mark Sanchez injured. If Quinn is on the roster at 4 p.m. Saturday, his contract is guaranteed for the season since he’s a vested veteran. But, if the Jets cut Quinn but re-sign him on Monday, his contract would not be guaranteed.

The risk would be another team signing Quinn.

“We are obviously really heavy at that position,” coach Rex Ryan said. “We’re probably the only team in the league — well, I’m sure we are the only team in the league with four quarterbacks right now. But we’ll keep looking out there and we’ll see if we stay that way.”

Either way, Ryan would not commit to dressing Quinn as a third active quarterback for Sunday’s season-opener. He admitted he’s generally not a fan of that.

“Because what happens, that third quarterback very seldom is used in a game,” Ryan said. “There’s guys that can help on special teams. There’s guys that can help in different roles and things like that. That’s why unless you have an injury going in, normally you don’t dress three.”

After a scheduled day off on Thursday, WR Santonio Holmes (foot) practiced in a limited capacity on Friday. He’s officially listed as questionable for Sunday, although The Post’s Brian Costello has reported Holmes will play a limited number of snaps.

“Like I said the whole time, I’m hopeful he plays. Let’s just put it that way,” Ryan said. “We’ll see. But we’ll let the doctors and trainers give the final word on it. But as I’ve said the whole time, I’m hopeful he plays because he is a difference-maker.”

DT Kenrick Ellis (back) is the other questionable Jet. He practiced on Friday in a limited capacity, too, and said he’s hoping to play.

“I feel better every day,” he said.

While Darrelle Revis (knee) is officially listed as probable for Sunday, Bucs guard Carl Nicks , a two-time Pro Bowler, is out thanks to a foot injury. … TE Kellen Winslow played with the Bucs from 2009-12, averaging 72 catches per season, and will face his former team for the first time. Winslow downplayed it, though, saying: “It’s just another game for me.”
