MEL KICKS BOOZE WITH A ‘PASSION’

“Mad Mel” Gibson – whose controversial, blood-drenched new Jesus flick has evangelical Christians swooning – says he’s kicked the booze.

“I used to drink six bottles of beer for breakfast, but now I only drink water,” Gibson told the German magazine Bella.

The 47-year-old star of the “Mad Max” series says his problems with alcohol began in the early 1980s, when his sudden fame went to his head. Now in recovery, Gibson says he quit after wife Robyn threatened to leave him.

Excerpts from Gibson’s latest movie, “The Passion” – which some critics have called anti-Semitic – were publicly screened for the first time before a stadium full of evangelical Christians in California’s Orange County on Friday.

Several of the more than 30,000 churchgoers who caught the four-minute preview said it was a powerful reaffirmation of their faith.
