CARGILL CAPTURES CUNY AWARDS

CCNY forward Lauren Cargill had a hard time saying goodbye to her friends yesterday at the CUNYAC awards luncheon in Midtown. No, Cargill wasn’t upset, she just didn’t have a free hand at that moment.

The senior was too busy carrying out her CUNYAC Player of The Year and All-CUNYAC first-team trophies.

“These awards are great honors,” Cargill said. “There are some real good players in this league and I’m proud that they felt I was the best of them.”

And she was.

Cargill led the conference in scoring for the fourth straight season with a 20.5 ppg. But even more astonishing is that Cargill is the all-time leading scorer in CUNYAC history (male or female) with 2,247 points.

She’ll get a chance to add to that total tomorrow afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Women’s CUNYAC tournament, where fourth-seeded CCNY (16-9) faces fifth-seeded host Baruch (17-8).

On the men’s side, College of Staten Island sophomore Michael Stewart landed the MVP award.

With rookie coach Brian Gasper, Stewart and the third-seeded Dolphins (15-9) start their bid to repeat as CUNYAC champs when they face sixth-seeded York (9-14) in the men’s quarterfinals Sunday night at Baruch.

First-round action begins tonight when (10) City Tech travels to (7) John Jay and (9) Medgar Evers visits (8) Brooklyn.
