Jets get Coples back on practice field

The Jets defense could be getting one of its key pieces back this week.

Outside linebacker Quinton Coples was on the practice field Monday morning for the first time since fracturing his ankle on Aug. 17 in a preseason game with the Jaguars. The Jets do not have to give a status (questionable, doubtful, probable, etc.) for Coples until the end of the week, but his presence at practice is a sign he could play this week against the Bills.

The Jets expected big things from Coples this season. During training camp he was moving between outside linebacker and the interior of the defensive line. He led the team with 5 ½ sacks last season as a rookie.

Garrett McIntyre has started the first two games for the Jets in Coples’ place.

The Jets waived punter Robert Malone and re-signed punter Ryan Quigley, who was with the team in training camp. Malone had a rough outing in last week’s loss in New England. He averaged 44.6 yards on nine punts and had one punt that went just 21 yards. … The team also signed LB Scott Solomon to fill the roster spot vacated when QB Mark Sanchez was placed on short-term IR. The Jets cut WR Rahsaan Vaughn from the practice squad and brought back LB Danny Lansanah.
