Homeless hero honored for returning $40K

Boston police will honor a homeless man Monday for turning over a backpack he found that contained more than $40,000 in cash and traveler’s checks.

Glen James was at the South Bay Center, a mall in the Dorchester section, where he found the lost backpack at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, authorities said. James quickly flagged down police officers on patrol and handed them the backpack.

Inside officers found $2,400 in cash, nearly $40,000 in traveler’s checks, Chinese passports and personal papers.

Meanwhile, the man who had lost the backpack was brought to the police station, where officers confirmed that it was his.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis was scheduled to award James a special citation for his extraordinary demonstration of honesty and character.
