Karl Dorrell, former UCLA coach, is 4th candidate for Giants

Former Texans quarterback coach Karl Dorrell will interview Friday for the Giants’ offensive coordinator job, and he brings with him something the other three candidates do not: head-coaching experience.

Dorrell, 50, was the head coach for five years at UCLA, where went to three Rose Bowls as a receiver. Dorrell went 35-27 with the Bruins, and in 2005 was named co-Coach of the Year in the Pac-10 after UCLA went 10-2 and finished No 13 in the country. Dorrell is the first African-American head coach in UCLA history.

Dorrell spent the past two years as the quarterbacks coach for the Texans, but was dismissed when Bill O’Brien was hired and fired almost all of Gary Kubiak’s staff.

Dorrell started his NFL coaching career in 2000 as the Broncos receivers coach. After his five-year stay at UCLA, he coached quarterbacks and receivers for the Dolphins before going to the Texans. Dorrell never has been a coordinator in the NFL.

The Giants have already interviewed Buccaneers offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan for the position that opened up last week when Kevin Gilbride – under fire after a terrible offensive season in 2013 – decided to retire. Dowell Loggains, the former Titans offensive coordinator, meets Thursday with the Giants. On Saturday, it’s Packers quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, who arrives with the endorsement of Aaron Rodgers.
