Jets’ Wilkerson praises coach Ryan’s contract extension

Jets coach Rex Ryan’s contract extension was a popular move with the players, at least according to star defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson.

“I was happy, definitely,” Wilkerson told The Post at halftime of the Knicks’ 109-95 loss to the Clippers at the Garden Friday night. “Rex is my guy. He drafted me here. I’m happy he’s back. He’s the guy. The players, we all love him.”

Ryan and the Jets agreed on a multi-year extension this week that is fully guaranteed through the 2015 season. He had just one year left on his previous deal.

Wilkerson, who had 64 tackles, 10 ¹/₂ sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception in a dominant third season, said for the Jets to reach the postseason next year after a three-year hiatus, they have to improve in a number of areas. He wasn’t specific.

“I think the future is bright,” he said. “We got a great GM in John Idzik. He’s a great man with a great plan.”

Wilkerson was also high on quarterback Geno Smith, who went through the typical ups and downs of a rookie, but led the Jets to two straight wins and three of four to end the season.

“He’s a talented guy. He’s a rookie,” Wilkerson said. “He made some mistakes, but he also made some good things happen as a rookie. I’m waiting to see what he has to offer for next year.”
