Desperate times: Abreu, Figgins, Sizemore all land deals

Well, at least they’ll be rested.

Bobby Abreu, Chone Figgins and Grady Sizemore each signed with major league teams this week, despite all three missing the entire 2013 season.

The 39-year-old Abreu, who was out of baseball this past season, signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. A source told ESPN.com that should he make the Phillies roster, he will earn $800,000.

Abreu last in 2012, when he was cut by the Angels in late April and signed with Dodgers a week later. In 100 combined games, he hit .242 with three homers and 24 RBIs, posting a .350 on-base percentage. He failed to latch on with a team for 2013, but a strong showing in the Venezuelan Winter League enticed teams.

Sizemore signed with the Red Sox for a base salary of $750,000, but could earn up to $6 million with incentives, according to Boston.com. Sizemore has not played since 2011 in the aftermath of knee and back surgeries. The 32-year-old did make three straight All-Star Games from 2006-08 while playing center field for the Indians.

Figgins, 36, signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers, according to multiple reports. Figgins had eight solid seasons with the Angels, but proved to be an utter bust for the Mariners after signing a four-year, $36 million deal before the 2010 season. He hit .188 and .181 in 2011 and 2012, respectively, and then washed out of spring training with the Marlins last spring training.

Despite not garnering much interest last year, Abreu had multiple suitors this offseason. The Mets and Indians were in the hunt before he opted for a reunion with the Phillies.

In July 2006, Abreu was traded to the Yankees, and hit .295 in his two-plus seasons in the Bronx.

However, his time as a Yankee will perhaps best be remembered for his reluctance in chasing fly balls that neared the right-field walls.
