City removes illegal speed camera in Staten Island

The city’s vaunted new speed-camera program has already hit a speed bump.

The city Department of Transportation yanked one of its cameras on Staten Island after state Sen. Diane Savino pointed out it was illegal.

The camera on Hylan Boulevard and Burbank Avenue in New Dorp was one of six devices in the city that were supposed to be installed near public schools with speeding problems.

But this one was not down the street from a school nor within a quarter mile of one — contrary to state law, the Staten Island Advance revealed.

DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg last week vowed to void all tickets issued by the illegal lens and refund any fines that may have already been paid, the paper reported.

The Post reported the new cameras nabbed some 900 drivers speeding in just the first two weeks of operation
