Sex and earnestness fuel ‘The Happy Sad’

A movie about bisexuals sounds fresh and fun on paper, but a sensitive acoustic song under the opening credits shows exactly where “The Happy Sad” is going. Deadly earnestness and sex don’t mix well at the movies.

Ken Urban adapted his play, and director Rodney Evans concentrates on making Brooklyn and the young cast look pretty. Marcus and Aaron (LeRoy McClain and Charlie Barnett) are an African-American couple who have decided to try an “open relationship.” The bisexuals are Stan (Cameron Scoggins), a musician, and Annie (Sorel Carradine, Keith’s daughter, showing some charm), a schoolteacher.

All four shuffle around each other’s beds and couches like the world’s blandest deck of playing cards. There are attempted jokes that are recognizable as such, but the dialogue is like overhearing a “Where is this relationship going?” discussion at an adjoining brunch table.
