No hard feelings: Ratner in LI arena deal

After delivering a death blow to the aging Nassau Coliseum by luring hockey’s Islanders away to his Barclays Center in Brooklyn, mega-developer Bruce Ratner got picked yesterday to redevelop the long-reviled arena in Uniondale, LI.

An affiliate of Ratner’s Forest City Enterprises beat out Madison Square Garden by pledging a guaranteed minimum $195 million in rent over the next 34 years, more than the $112 million offered by MSG, said Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano.

Ratner also plans to spend $229 million to turn the facility — derisively dubbed the “Nausea Coliseum” and the “Nassau Mausoleum” for its claustrophobic conditions — into what Mangano predicted would be a “first-class destination.”

Asked about the irony of having Ratner redevelop the arena given his role in the Islanders’ departure, a Mangano spokeswoman said: “The proposer that provided the best economic benefits for Nassau County is the one that was selected and will provide decades of family entertainment for residents.”

Other terms of the deal include Ratner assuming all costs and responsibility for the site.
