Cuomo defends giving NY say over Comcast merger

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday proposed changes that will give state cable regulators more power are aimed at protecting consumers.

Critics of the proposed changes, which The Post reported exclusively Wednesday, said they could make Comcast’s $45 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable tougher to pull off.

“[The proposed changes] are very important arrangements, and the state has a valid role in making sure that the consumer is protected,” Cuomo said at the State Museum in Albany.

Cuomo said he didn’t have a position on the mega-merger, but added, “I’m sure the [Public Service Commission] is going to look at the arrangement and what it means for New York.”

Comcast is expected to file its application to acquire TWC with the Justice Department next week, sources told The Post. Separate documents will land at the Federal Communications Commission in early April.

Separately, Consumer Reports President Jim Guest sent subscribers an email asking them to protest the proposal with Justice and the FCC.
