‘Bank thief’ ID’d by mangy fur coat

Clothes make the man — easy to arrest.

A Queens bandit was done in by his tacky fur coat, which left him easy to track down after he held up a Chase bank on Tuesday, police said.

A freelance photographer monitoring police radios heard a description of the robber and his ill-fitting orange jacket at around 3:15 p.m., and he raced to the area.

The shutterbug, Roy Renna, got to the bank on Grand Avenue near Hamilton Place in Maspeth before the cops, and spotted the not-so-stylish suspect limping near a Laundromat several blocks away.

“His fur coat gave him up,” Renna told The Post.

Renna flagged down a patrol car and pointed officers in the direction of the alleged crook.

“As I was keeping an eye on him, I made a safe turn and sped up to the cops. I told them that there was a guy fitting the bank robber’s description walking down that way,” Renna said.

Cops stopped the man, identified as Jimmie Knight, 56. They found $1,000 in cash, wrapped in a purple rubber band, in his pocket, police sources said.

A bank manager later identified him.

Knight allegedly pantomimed having a gun under his coat
as he pulled off the heist.

The suspect, from Staten Island, is charged with robbery, menacing and criminal possession of stolen property.

Cops thanked the photographer, who has worked freelance for The Post since 2006.

“It felt good to be able to catch a criminal . . . I’m still speechless,” said Renna.

He later photographed Knight being cuffed at the scene.
