296 – HOW MANY TIMES L.I. DRIVER HAD HIS LICENSE SUSPENDED

Long Island police say a Roosevelt man who didn’t stop at a stop sign can’t seem to stop having his license suspended – and has amassed a whopping 296 suspensions.

Nassau County Police say Marion Williams, 49, was arrested early yesterday after two cops say he blew through a stop sign in Roosevelt.

Williams, who gave his address as 130 Stevens St., was driving a 1999 Saturn southbound on Park Avenue in his town early yesterday when Officers Martin Helmke and John Cefalu saw him allegedly ignore the stop sign.

When the officers called in his name to headquarters, they determined Williams was driving with a suspended license.

They busted him for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, as well as failing to stop at the stop sign.

Williams’ car was impounded and may be sold at auction as a result of his record, authorities said.

When cops realized he had racked up 296 suspensions on 66 different dates, one veteran Nassau officer labeled the suspensions “very unusual.”

“It’s a felony to have more than 10 suspensions,” said Sgt. David Curry.

Curry said Williams’ last suspension was in May 1997, for “missing a court date for the other traffic offenses.”

Williams, who is unemployed, was born in South Carolina, Curry said. Asked how someone could accrue so many suspensions, Curry replied: “This guy might just be a hard guy to locate.”

He said serious jail time is often the penalty when alcohol or serious injuries are involved.

But Curry said he won’t be surprised if Williams receives a wrist slap.

“Nobody was injured and no alcohol was involved” in yesterday’s arrest, Curry said. “He’ll be eligible for bail. Whether he can pay it or not, is another story.”

In 1994, city cops busted a man with 633 license suspensions. In that case in The Bronx, the driver used a series of aliases and addresses that authorities put together.

Williams has garnered all his suspensions under his own name, police said.
