IN GOD WE TRUST, BUT NEW COLORS HELP

It’s not easy being green – even the $20 greenback will lose some of its cachet color in a few weeks when the feds give Andrew Jackson a color makeover.

On March 27, the Treasury Department will unveil the new double sawbuck with an updated image of Jackson and the White House – and colors other than green.

“The colors are subtle,” said Bureau of Engraving and Printing director Tom Ferguson, although he wouldn’t elaborate.

Other details are also being kept secret until the unveiling.

The $20 bill was last updated in 1996 as part of a plan to thwart counterfeiters. Engravers put water marks and other distinguishing marks on the note to make it harder to copy. The bills have an image of Jackson on the right side that can be seen when held up to the light.

The $20 bill has become the most commonly counterfeited bill in the nation.

After the debut of the new currency, updated versions of $50 and $100 bills will follow.
