Jets’ Hill has concussion; Holmes also hurting

The Jets are facing the possibility of losing their top two wide receivers for this week.

Coach Rex Ryan confirmed Stephen Hill suffered a concussion Sunday in the 38-13 loss to the Titans. Hill was hit by Titans safety Michael Griffin on the second play of the game and never returned.

“He’s going through the concussion protocol,” Ryan said. “He got a concussion during the game, that’s why he’s going through that.”

Hill would have to be cleared by a neurologist to return. Players typically miss at least one week after suffering a concussion.

As for Santonio Holmes, Ryan did not have an update on his injured hamstring. Holmes did not speak to reporters after the game. Hamstring injuries can vary greatly in degree, but it would not be surprising if he is out this week.

Ryan said he would have a further update Wednesday when the team is required to provide an injury report.

The Jets have interest in veteran wide receiver David Nelson, a source said. They recently worked him out and he is a candidate to be signed.

According to a source, the team has not expressed any interest in Braylon Edwards, who spent training camp with the team.

Jets defensive linemen Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples could be slapped with fines after their hit on Titans quarterback Jake Locker that knocked him out of the game Sunday.

No flag was thrown on the play, but the NFL will review the hit to see if it was illegal, according to a source.

In the third quarter, Wilkerson hit Locker just after he released the ball. Locker twisted awkwardly and then Coples collided with him. It was unclear whether Locker’s momentum carried him into Coples or if the second-year linebacker dipped his shoulder into Locker.

Locker was carted off and taken to a local hospital with a right hip injury. The Titans have not revealed the severity of the injury but multiple reports say Locker will miss a significant amount of time for the 3-1 Titans. Titans coach Mike Munchak called both hits “unnecessary” while speaking to reporters in Nashville on Monday.

Jets QB Mark Sanchez traveled to Gulf Breeze, Fla. on Monday to have his injured right shoulder reexamined by Dr. James Andrews, according to two sources.

Sanchez will continue to rehab the shoulder, which has a slight labrum tear, instead of having surgery at this time, the sources said.

Surgery remains a possibility, but Sanchez wants to exhaust the rehabilitation process before going that route.

The fifth-year quarterback is currently on IR with a designation to return. He is eligible to play in Week 11 against Buffalo.

He injured the shoulder on Aug. 24 in the fourth quarter of a preseason game with the Giants.

Jets RB Mike Goodson’s four-game suspension ended Monday. He was able to go through the team’s walk-through and can play this week in Atlanta.

“Words can’t even express how excited I am,” Goodson said. “Just being able to be back out there.”

Both CB Dee Milliner and RB Chris Ivory, who missed Sunday’s game with hamstring injuries, said they hope to be able to play this week but have to see what the trainers say first. … Ryan’s stepmother, Joanie Ryan, died after a long bout with Alzheimer’s. Her funeral is Tuesday in Kentucky. Ryan will attend the services, but will be back in time for practice Wednesday. There is no practice on Tuesdays.
