‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ is classic Wes Anderson

Prior to this week, details about Wes Anderson’s next film, “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” had been scarce. But since Monday, the film’s gotten a release date, a poster and now a trailer.

Set in the 1920s, the film focuses on the friendship formed between hotel concierge Gustav H, played by Ralph Fiennes, and lobby boy Zero Moustafa, portrayed by newcomer Tony Revolori, as they travel across Europe. The plot also involves the theft of a Renaissance painting and the tug-of-war over a family fortune.

“The Grand Budapest Hotel” looks unlikely to sway Anderson-haters, with the director’s trademark tics — visual preciousness, dry humor and a preoccupation with family squabbles — on full display. One new quirk is the movie seems to have been inspired by the madcap adventure comedies of old Hollywood this time around.

In addition to Fiennes and Revolori, the film’s massive cast includes F. Murray Abraham, Saoirse Ronan and Mathieu Amalric, along with a slew of Anderson’s veterans like Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum and Jason Schwartzman. The movie also features the return of Owen Wilson, who Anderson had worked with in all of his films except for previous one, 2012’s “Moonrise Kingdom.”

“The Grand Budapest Hotel” will be released on March 7, 2014.
