VHS or Beta, “Can’t Believe

a Single Word”

The Louisville, Ky.-based band channels ’80s pop on the first single off its third album, “Bring on the Comets.” The infectious and commercially friendly song features a simple melody paired with soaring, dramatic vocals and an enthusiastic chorus. The band plays Bowery Ballroom tomorrow and Studio B in Brooklyn on Thursday.

G. Love & Special Sauce,

“Cold Beverage”

The jammy alternative hip-hop band from Philly recently released the DVD “A Year and a Night With G. Love and Special Sauce.” The DVD included a behind-the-scenes look at the 13th year of the band’s around-the-world touring, accompanied by a CD of full-length live performances – including this ode to drinking, originally from a 1994 album. Catch the band playing Central Park’s Summerstage tonight.

Serena Ryder, “Brand New Love”

The Canadian songstress makes her U.S. debut with the acoustic rock EP “Told You in a Whispered Song,” which showcases her three-octave range. The first song off the disc mixes a country-music vibe with strummy guitars and light percussion to illustrate how she can mend a broken heart with just a little bit of lovin’.

Mark Olsen, “Salvation Blues”

Olsen, formerly of the Minnesota band the Jayhawks, wrote the album “The Salvation Blues” while he was on a two-year trek around Europe, following his separation from singer/songwriter Victoria Williams. The hopeful title track focuses on being at the crossroads of life, and throws in some soul searching for good measure. He’s at Bowery Ballroom Thursday.

Swivel Chairs, “Sun Goes Down”

The genre-crossing album “The Slow Transmission” is the culmination of the two-year collaboration of the Brooklyn-based duo, resulting in songs that are as at home on college radio as they would be on a hipster’s iPod. This tune is a thoughtful, peaceful, almost sleepy song about the passing of time. – Maxine Shen
