On Tuesday, the Web site, thesmokinggun.com, introduced a clip of Chamberlain being put through the straight-line walk test by a Nebraska state trooper. Yesterday, Chamberlain said the issue has been in his rearview mirror for a while.

“I will be 100 percent honest with all of you, it’s been behind me since October. What are you going to get out of it if you harp on it? You are going to make yourself miserable,” Chamberlain said. “I am lucky this happened . . . I can turn this and help a lot of people . . . ”

Chamberlain is slated to face the Royals on Sunday in Kansas City, where he can expect the first taste of season-long verbal abuse.

“When it comes down to it, I am going to do my job and I am going to be a great teammate to all these guys and I am going to be accountable for everything I do,” he said.

Though manager Joe Girardi, who saw the video, had no comment, reliever Brian Bruney sympathized with the 23-year-old.

“You feel for him,” Bruney said. “As long as it doesn’t affect him, it’s none of my business. . . . He is young and he made a mistake. . . . I feel bad for him.”

Chamberlain said he had called Yogi Berra to make sure the Hall of Famer was OK with Chamberlain making a joke of Berra’s height during the DUI stop.

“If I don’t put myself in the situation to begin with I don’t have to answer any of these questions,” Chamberlain said. “It’s one of those things you take it and you understand that’s what it’s about.”
