NY synagogue bomb defendants may claim entrapment

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Four ex-convicts accused of plotting to bomb New York City synagogues and shoot down planes apparently will claim they were lured into the conspiracy with gifts including cash and fried chicken.

The defendants’ lawyers demanded Thursday in federal court that prosecutors turn over evidence of any payments, promises or other inducements offered to the men.

Among the enticements they mentioned were checks of up to $25,000, gifts to the men’s families and an open credit line at a fried chicken store.

One lawyer says the request involves the issue of entrapment. Entrapment generally means enticing someone to do something illegal that he would not otherwise have done.

Prosecutors say the men plotted to bomb Bronx synagogues and bring down military planes with missiles.

The men have pleaded not guilty and are being held without bail.
