TAX PREPARER THREATENS TO KILL PROSECUTOR HANDLING CASE

A Manhattan tax preparer imprisoned 14 years ago on grand larceny charges and again indicted for a similar crime this year was arrested today for threatening to kill a prosecutor who handled his case, authorities said.

Jack Chang, 54, of Bayside, Queens, sent threatening letters to the home and office of the prosecutor, a senior assistant district attorney in Manhattan, two weeks ago.

In one letter dated June 9, Chang allegedly wrote that he could hire someone to kill Gilda Mariani — but had not done so because he wanted to do it himself.

The letters featured a picture of a tombstone bearing Mariani’s name and the years 1958 and 2009.

The Manhattan DA’s office plans to release the letters and announce Chang’s arrest later today at a news conference.

Mariani, who handled both Chang cases, works as the chief of the money laundering and tax crimes unit inside the Manhattan DA’s office.

Chang was orginally sentenced to three years behind bars back in 1995, but served less than half his prison sentence.

He was again jailed earlier this year after his arrest following another indictment for fraud in April, although a judge later released him.
