Students rush to CUNY

The number of students trying to transfer to City University of New York public colleges for the fall 2010 semester jumped 77.5 percent compared to this time last year, officials said.

The CUNY network, where tuition this year is $4,600 at the four-year schools and $3,150 at the two-year colleges, received more than 16,000 transfer applications from students at other, often pricier colleges, as of March 9.

CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor Jay Hershenson told The Post: “Affordability plus an enhanced CUNY reputation . . . simply trumps going into debt.”

Film student Ryan Petrucelli, 22, who transferred to Hunter from Pace University, said he was getting a better education at a tenth the cost.
