Give Phil Simms another championship ring.

The former Giants Super Bowl-winning quarterback, now a game analyst for the “NFL on CBS,” was a near unanimous choice as best pro football color commentator on TV today.

With the NFL this season reaching record-high ratings, a panel of Post Sports columnists, writers and editors were asked to rate the marquee analysts from CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC and NFL Network. Playing the game, it turns out, doesn’t always qualify you to talk about it.

THE BEST

Phil Simms (CBS): Simms is appreciated for his accurate and understated manner, much like he played when going 22 of 25 passing in the Giants’ Super Bowl XXV win over the Broncos. Simms can spot what has happened then explain it without exaggeration. Someone to enjoy a game with.

Ron Jaworski (ESPN ): Jaws, a former Eagles quarterback, takes you from the film room to the field with a no-nonsense “This is football” game plan. Also an ESPN presence outside the booth, Jaworski is the preferred play-caller of the Xs and Os crowd.Chris

Collinsworth (NBC): The former Bengals wide receiver comes across as a know-it-all, but he actually might. Tends to concentrate on the negative — why a team failed rather than why the other succeeded — but that doesn’t mean he’s wrong.

THE WORST

Tony Siragusa (FOX): Perhaps the mammoth former Ravens nose tackle just takes up too much room in the booth. That could be why he delivers all his comments from field level. Nearly everyone on the panel would prefer he be removed from the stadium entirely.

Joe Theismann ( NFL Network): Lawrence Taylor ended his playing career when he broke his leg, and it had been hoped ESPN ended his TV career when it fired him three years ago. No luck. Theismann is delusional. He thinks we all like the sound of his voice as much as he does.

Matt Millen (NFL Network): A complete failure in the Lions front office, Millen continues his losing streak in the booth. If he didn’t know football then, what made anyone think he knows it now? And why does it take so long to tell us?
