Hundreds of tearful mourners Sunday packed wakes for two young girls killed in last week’s horrific boat capsizing in the Long Island Sound.
Grieving friends and relatives of Victoria Gaines, 7, and Harlie Treanor, 11, streamed into the two funeral homes.
The kids drowned in the cabin of a yacht owned by Treanor’s father’s after watching July 4th fireworks.
The scene inside Gaines’ service at Wagner Funeral Home in Hicksville was “horrible,” according to attendee Diana Horowitz.
Dozens of young children lined up at her coffin, she said.
“Such a beautiful family,” Horowitz said as she exited the service.
Many mourners shuttled between the two services as they paid tribute to both youngsters.
“I wanted to tell both of them goodbye,” said Kayla Smith, 8, of Huntington Station, after Harlie’s wake at M. A. Connell Funeral Home.
“I wish they were here.”
A total of 27 people — at least ten of them children — were aboard the vessel when it flipped.
David Aureliano 12, whose uncle was operating the boat, also died in the cabin with the two girls.
Authorities have tentatively planned to raise the sunken vessel on Tuesday.
That will allow them to investigate possible mechanical failures and to determine if there were enough life jackets aboard the doomed 34-foot Silverton boat.
The adults on board said it was flipped over by a rogue wave caused by a sudden storm.
Others have argued that the boat was overloaded beyond its capacity and that the excess weight might have contributed to the capsizing.
The Nassau County District Attorney’s office and police are investigating.
