Freezing winter gives way to mild weather during Super Bowl

The NFL lucked out Sunday with mild, almost perfect football weather sandwiched between last week’s deep freeze and Monday’s expected snow.

It was a comfortable 49 degrees when the Seahawks and Broncos kicked off at MetLife Stadium.

Sunday’s high hit 54, well above normal highs in the upper 30s.

“We got lucky as far as the Super Bowl is concerned, that’s for sure,” said Accuweather meteorologist Carl Erickson.

Sunday’s 49 was a practical heat wave compared with last weekend’s chill.

But Super Bowl travelers getting out of town face 2 to 4 inches of snow and a high of 36 degrees Monday, according to Accuweather.

“There’s a very good possibility of delays,” Erickson said. “Monday, on a normal business day, is already pretty busy. You’d have delays regardless of people trying to leave the Super Bowl. So I would expect delays at the very least.”

The mercury is set to fall to 30 again by Friday or Saturday.
