RANGERS, KEENAN CLEARED

The NHL has declined to file tampering charges against either the Rangers or Panthers coach Mike Keenan, The Post has learned.

Glen Sather yesterday met with commissioner Gary Bettman for a previously scheduled budget conference at the league’s Sixth Avenue office. Bettman, who holds the meetings with each club, must have swallowed hard at whatever hypothetical payroll numbers the GM provided -and he questioned Sather about his contact last week with Keenan.

While the Florida coach has contended that the Rangers initiated contact with him, Sather told the league that it was Keenan who made the first move in inquiring about the Blueshirts’ coaching vacancy.

Neither of the clubs wanted tampering charges to be filed and Bettman, we’re told, arrived at a no-harm, no-foul conclusion.
