Working in ‘Unison’

Even if your colleagues are in different locations, you can all work in the same room with Unison.

The free Web service lets you set up digital spaces in which people working on the same project can post updates, files and voice messages, and even engage in one-on-one conversations.

To set up your “room” on Unison, you just have to click on a button, name the room and invite the people you’re working with.

All the content in a room is private to the members of that group, and you can control what clients and partners can access.

Within the room, users can post files including documents, photos and videos.

You can also leave messages and address individual users by mentioning their names preceded by the @ symbol, as you would on Twitter. You can get the attention of the entire room by typing “@all.” People mentioned this way get a notification, so they know to check out something posted in the room.

Unison endeavors to provide a particularly accurate sense of which users are available and shows you the work that they’re doing.

You can engage in live audio conversations with other people in the room if you want to have an impromptu conference call. Just click on a button to start talking live. Other people can join the conversation by clicking on the same button.

If no one else is in the room, you can click on a different button to leave a voice message.

Unison has a free Web service and apps for Macs, PCs, iPhones, iPads and Android-based mobile devices.
