NBA: Bobcats’ Kidd-Gilchrist has concussion

The Bobcats lost 109-95 to the Rockets last night and lost Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Gilchrist, the No. 2 overall pick in last year’s draft out of Kentucky, collided with teammate Jeffrey Taylor in the fourth quarter and left the court in a stretcher. He suffered a concussion.

Kidd-Gilchrist was fitted for a neck brace and taken to the hospital and had precautionary X-rays and a CT scan, all of which were negative for head and neck injuries. He will remain hospitalized overnight.

Kyrie Irving scored 35 points, including 13 in the final 2:52, and the Cavaliers stunned the Thunder 115-110in Cleveland.

Irving single-handedly closed out one of the NBA’s best teams, making his last five shots and showing why he’s an All-Star at the age of 20. Irving’s biggest shot was a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to make it 113-108.

Kevin Durant scored 32 points and Russell Westbrook 28 for the Thunder, who came in 35-11 and with the league’s best road record.

In San Antonio, Tim Duncan sprained his left knee and right ankle in the first half of the Spurs’ 96-86 win over the Wizards.

Tony Parker scored 19 points for San Antonio (38-11), which has won 18 straight at home. The severity of the injury is not known, but Duncan didn’t return to the bench after being helped off the court by teammates.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle was fined $25,000 by the NBA for criticizing the officiating after Dallas’ loss to Golden State on Thursday night.

Yesterday, Carlisle sent a text message to reporters saying he agreed with the fine and his comments were “not appropriate.”

Brazil’s doubles team of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares upset the top-ranked Mike and Bob Bryan 7-6 (6), 6-7 (7), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and kept the United States from clinching the first-round Davis Cup match in Jacksonville, Fla..

It was only the third time the Bryan brothers had dropped a Davis Cup match. It was just the second time they had dropped a five-set match in ATP competition. Their only other five-set defeat was in a 1999 match at Wimbledon. The United States has a 2-1 advantage heading into today’s reverse singles.

ETC.: Former NL top rookie Williams dead

Earl Williams, the 1971 National League Rookie of the Year, died last week at his home in Somerset, N.J.He was 64.

Williams, who died of acute myeloid leukemia. earned the rookie award after hitting 33 home runs with Atlanta.

In Las Vegas, featherweight champion Jose Aldo retained his title with a victory over Frankie Edgar in the main event of UFC 156.

Aldo used his precise striking and effective leg kicks to neutralize Edgar’s constant pressure, winning a unanimous decision for his 15th consecutive victory.

It was scored 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 in favor of Aldo, who improved to 22-1. Edgar fell to 14-4-1.

Halfpipe skier Simon d’Artois is expected to make a full recovery after suffering a concussion and blacking out for about 10 seconds when he smacked his head during a fall at the U.S. Grand Prix in Park City, Utah. The Canadian fell near the top of the 22-foot superpipe and slid to the bottom unconscious.
