Mahan shares lead at Pebble Beach tourney

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Hunter Mahan was bracing for the worst at Pebble Beach and instead was reminded how much he loves this place.

The rain stayed away yesterday and Mahan took advantage of gorgeous conditions for a 6-under 66 that gave him a share of the lead with Russell Knox in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Knox, trying to make the most out of limited starts on the PGA Tour this year, had a 6-under 64 at Monterey Peninsula. Phil Mickelson, who was a wire-to-wire winner at the Phoenix Open last week, shot a 1-under 69.

Rough day for Condi

Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, making her most public outing on a golf course since becoming the first of two female members at Augusta National, combined with Jason Bohn, her playing partner, for a 2-under 70.

Rice played well but was rattled when she hit a woman in the head on an errant approach shot on the sixth hole.

The ball struck the spectator on her forehead, which gushed with blood and sent her to the ground to recover.

The woman wept in pain while her daughter applied towels and medical personnel hustled over. Rice apologized to the woman and had an assistant get her phone number.

The woman was later walking in the gallery when Rice finished on No. 18. She declined to give her name but told the AP she was treated for a bruise and given pain medication. No stitches were

needed.
