Dog escapes plane, bolts across Newark runway

A dachshund escaped from a plane at Newark Airport Wednesday, leading to a wild chase across the runways that only ended when its owner was let off a plane to save her pup, sources said.

The German wiener dog darted from a Lufthansa flight as it was being loaded off the plane around 7:20 p.m., sources said.

The dog, Henry, went running around the tarmac for about an hour before Port Authority Police could track him down.

The airport’s emergency service unit cornered the dachshund by a fence on the airfield, but couldn’t coax it into custody, according to a Port Authority spokesman Ron Marsico.

Finally, officials got the owner, a woman from Mercer County, NJ, off Lufthansa Flight 412 and brought her to the area of the tarmac where Henry was cowering. When he saw her he ran to her arms.

It was not clear if there were any flight disruptions due to the runaway dog.
