Port Authority taking over Atlantic City airport

The Port Authority is taking over operations of Atlantic City’s tiny two-runway airport, officials announced today. “There are growth opportunities at this airport,” said Bill Baroni, the agency’s deputy executive director.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ordered the takeover. Its currently managed by the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

The airport served 1.4 million passengers in 2012. An average of 27 flights a day leave the airport.

But that number could climb under the Port Authority.

Baroni – speaking at the agency’s monthly board meeting – said that Air Canada had already expressed interest in operating in AC after learning of the takeover.

“In our experience, Port Authority has been excellent to work with,” the company said in a letter to the PA that Baroni read.
